BACK in 2015, Samsung was the first brand to launch an HDR-capable TV. Since then, it has continued to set the pace when it comes to unlocking the COLOR potential, full BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST of the HDR format.

For years now Samsung has been at the forefront of LED/LCD TV technology. It delivers design and feature innovations that have made it become the biggest selling TV brand globally. 

Its latest and most significant step towards mastering HDR is QLED.

QLED? What's it? 
To understand QLED, firstly, we need to take a closer look at the definition of the words "QLED"-------- What does "QLED" stand for? [See diagram 1] 

The LED part of QLED stands for light-emitting diode (The lighting system used in the majority of LED/LCD TVs). The important bit of QLED is the Q, which stands for Quantum Dot. 

In short, an easier way to understand what's QLED is to understand Quantum Dot Technology. That's simple.

QD (Quantum Dot) and million of color 

Most of TV is using an inefficient and limited combination of colors filter and white LED to produce color. Quantum Dots, on the other hands, adopts a different approach in the production of color.

QD is semiconductor nanocrystals which can produce three pure (monochromatic) color: Red, Green, and Blue light.[See diagram 2]

All these QD is with different size between 2 to 10 nanometers in diameter. These different sizes of QD will produce different colors. E.g. the smallest dots focus on blue, the larger ones focus on red.[See diagram 3]

All these QD is contained in a FILM, namely Quantum Dot Film. A QLED TV is comprised of many layers such as Polarizer, Light Guide Plate, LCD Panel etc. This QD film is inserted in between the layers, just like a sandwich.[See diagram below]

While light from the LED backlight passes through the QD film, it will turn light into billion colors. 

In summary, the strength of QLED or Quantum Dot technology is on its production of COLOR and BRIGHTNESS against rival OLED TV. 

To be precise, the key selling point about QD (QLED TV) is that they’re able to produce more saturated and precisely defined primary COLORS from LEDs backlight than conventional TV.

Quantum Dot technologies have been adopted long ago by Samsung
This technology was used in the Samsung higher-end model in the past few years, namely SUHD (this was actually a Quantum Dot TV). In 2017, QD technology was improved and took potential picture performance to a new level. Samsung decided to mark by adopting the QLED name for its highest-end TVs in 2017 as replacement of its previous SUHD.  

The improvement of QD technology in 2017 was mainly from the cladding of the QDs in a new metallic sheath.

One of the main benefits of this metal sheath is that the QDs can be positioned differently in the TV’s structure, enabling them to deliver their color and light more efficiently.

Because of the above QD technology, how Samsung QLED improve your viewing experience as a customer?

First, it produces extreme levels of brightness. This matters because brightness is critical to the high dynamic range of experience. HDR is designed to deliver more of the light levels our eyes see in the real world.

Secondly, it is a high color volume as compared to OLED

Thirdly, it is immune to screen burn despite its intense brightness and color saturation. Unlike rival OLED technology, which can leave intense graphical elements such as channel logos on the screen for extended periods of time.

These are still on their way but I am confident that they will be delivered on time 😉
